In our journey towards green living, many of us have already learned the lesson that less is more. Yet, excess can creep into our lives in unexpected ways. For instance, do you know how much laundry soap is too much? Are you sure?
Manufacturers have done an excellent job in recent years of creating concentrated solutions that have all the power of the old cleaning products yet use far less packaging, generating less waste in the factory and requiring less energy to transport. However, these energy savings only kick in when consumers use the “recommended dose.” If you’re still using 1.5 capfuls of detergent for a laundry soap that only needs a half cap, then you’re generating 3 times the intended waste!
Keep your cleaning routine green by taking the time to go through your cleaning products and read the suggested amounts. You may be surprised how much you can save. In addition to checking out your laundry detergent, read the labels on dish soap, shampoo, hand soap, and other cleaning supplies.
Using the correct amount of soap products is not only good for the planet, it’s better for your wallet and your health. Using too much of a concentrated cleaning solution can irritate sensitive skin and the extra solution will most likely be washed down the drain and end up, like so much else, in our water system.
If you really want to be more green, buy environmentally responsible cleaning products.
